My seven year old son asked me the big question on Monday. He wanted to know if Santa Claus was real or if parents just buy the gifts for their kids.
“Look at me Mum and tell me the truth” he asked. Completed aghast that he was already questioning the magic of Christmas, I just blabbered something to the effect of “if you don’t believe, you won’t receive”.
A boy in his class, who has an older brother, is spoiling it for everyone. I suppose that’s how we all found out the real story. Do I feel bad that I wasn’t completely open and truthful to my son? Not for one minute. I hoped he would still enjoy Christmas through innocent eyes for a few years yet. Does he believe me? I am not sure, but I hope I can pull it off this year and maybe if I am lucky even next.
Are your children questioning you about Santa? If yes, are you like me and hiding the truth or do you come clean?
