Taking some quiet time with a colouring book is the perfect way to escape the pre-Christmas rush. If you prefer creating your own drawings rather than colouring in, you can delight your family and friends by designing original Christmas cards and gift tags. STAEDTLER coloured pencils, fineliners and fibre-tip pens will turn hand-made and coloured-in designs alike into vibrant artwork.
This year no pile of presents under a Christmas tree should be without the fittingly-titled colouring book, “Johanna’s Christmas”, by bestselling artist and global STAEDTLER ambassador, Johanna Basford, together with STAEDTLER colouring products.
Swirling snowflakes, sweet candy canes and brightly decorated Christmas trees: Adult colouring Queen, Johanna Basford’s, new colouring book ‘Johanna’s Christmas’ brings the Christmas spirit to all fans of adult colouring. The Scottish illustrator has been working with STAEDTLER products to get her ideas down on paper since she was a student.
Joanna suggests that to make the finished pictures really come alive, try experimenting with a wide spectrum of shades to show subtle nuances in colour.
The STAEDTLER range offers endless opportunity for creative expression.
STAEDTLER triplus fineliners - superfine, metal-clad tips ensure you can colour in even the most intricate designs with complete precision.
STAEDTLER triplus color fibre-tip pens - have a one-millimetre line width that enables filling larger areas quickly and cleanly – a big Christmas tree, for instance, or the broad branches of a holly bush.
STAEDTLER ergosoft coloured pencils - soft and richly-coloured leads mean you can blend individual colours easily with each other. The triangular shape and velvety soft surface ensure a good grip and relaxed colouring.
How Johanna creates
Johanna Basford uses the STAEDTLER Mars micro mechanical pencil for sketching out her patterns. This mechanical pencil is especially good for fine detail. When using a compass, for instance to draw a circular frame, she recommends the STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph, which comes in 20 different degrees.
Once she has her idea down on paper, the author draws over the pencil sketch with STAEDTLER pigment liners. These have indelible pigment ink and are available in line widths ranging from 0.05 mm to 2 mm for the most intricate details. According to Basford, they are perfect for creating even the finest lines, for instance thin veins on foliage.
And then your artwork is ready to be coloured in. If you want to give your work a glitzy and glamorous finish, apply sparkling festive accents using STAEDTLER metallic markers in gold and silver. These are suitable for creating opaque writing and decoration on light and dark paper and on cardboard – a glamorous look which also adorns the covers of Johanna Basford’s books.

Jacana Kids is the brain child of Melbourne mothers, Jacqui Di Benedetto and Ana Garcia.
Several years ago, Jacqui was pregnant with twins and was told by doctors that one of her twins would be born blind and with several other development complications affecting speech and movement.
Her son, Domenic was indeed sight-affected. At six months of age his sight miraculously improved but brought with it two separate conditions: Cerebellar Vermain Hypoplasia, a rare brain disorder wherein a part of the brain (cerebellum) fails to develop fully, impeding balance and movement, and Ocular Motor Apraxia (OMA), a neurological condition affecting controlled eye movement, often accompanied by speech difficulties, coordination issues, and developmental delays.
Committed to providing opportunities for Domenic’s development, his parents reached out to various organisations that proved extremely beneficial to his growth and development.
Three years on, Domenic is walking, running, jumping and even scooting! This leap in development has stunned his doctors and is largely due to the assistance of these services. From physical exercise, visual and mental stimulation and socialisation skills, Domenic is now thriving in a pre-school environment.
Jacqui says “I am so thankful for all the support given to us by Early Childhood Education Services. We gained the practical tools and emotional support to help Dominic be able to live a full and independent life.”
Thanks can be practical, and now Jacqui Di Benedetto and Ana Garcia have launched their funky kids-wear label Jacana Kids online, to help raise money for charities who support the early childhood development of children with disabilities. Central to their ethos is the celebration of the artistic expression of children.
From love hearts to monsters, the Jacana Kids range features pieces carefully doodled by the hands of little people, with 50% of all sales going to Early Childhood Development programs in Australia. Sporting a serious streetwear attitude, Jacana Kids is not just a fashion statement, but also a charitable one.
Ana Garcia said “We wanted our clothing to represent the inherent joy of childhood and a child’s own artwork encapsulates that perfectly".”The duo designs each range with comfort and style in mind, using artwork from children from their chosen charities as well as those who just want to see their kids’ artwork in the mix. Each year Jacana Kids will donate 50% of their profits to different charities in Australia. This year their chosen charity is Yooralla, an organisation committed to supporting all people with disability to live independent and fulfilling lives.
All Jacana Kids clothing are printed locally in Melbourne, using sustainable materials with manufacturers practicing ethical production values.

Are you . . wondering what is going on in your child's day when they are away at childcare or school? Struggling to find things to talk about with your child? Don't know what to say or how to say it? Curious about what your child is really thinking and feeling?
Sipahh Fundraising Ventures is a dedicated program designed to help kids, clubs and schools raise money for their causes through the sale of Sipahh straws.
As school returns, one thing is for sure, P & F committees around the country will be busy planning out the year’s calendar of fundraising events. Fundraising committees are actually small businesses, and like small business are short on time and on the search for products and events that can help raise much-needed funds for schools and community groups and at the same time keep the school or local community engaged and contributing.
Sipahh is an Australian invention that has been around for over 10 years.
Once upon a time there was an Aussie Dad called Peter who loved the goodness of fresh milk. Every day he would encourage his four children to drink milk. What he didn’t like were the flavoured milk powders and drinks that messed with the goodness of milk because they were full of artificial colourings, preservatives and too much sugar. So Peter, who was really good at making things, decide to invent the Sipahh straw.
Each Sipahh straw has been specially seeded with little tapioca balls that are derived from the cassava, or yucca plant. Tapioca has been selected especially to help carry the Sipahh flavour in the straws.
To use, simply place straw in a cup of chilled wholesome (reduced fat) milk or milk alternatives and sip.
People all over the world, including Peter’s grandchildren, can now enjoy the goodness of milk as part of a balanced diet – with less sugar and no artificial colours or preservatives.
Australian kids love Sipahh straws because they’re unique and novel; parents love them because they’re lower in sugar than many other options. With portion controlled servings and less than 1/2 a teaspoon of sugar per straw, Sipahh helps people drink more wholesome milk, less sugar every day.
The Sipahh Crate
Each crate costs $26 (with free delivery for orders of 32+ crates).
It contains 24 x 4 packs and each 4 pack has an RRP of $2, making it an easy gold coin donation. The sales total of each crate is $48 ie a profit of $22 (and a margin of 46%).
Only 24 sales are needed to sell the whole carry box (that’s a lot less than most chocolate fundraising boxes)!
There are four flavours to sell in each Fundraising Crate
(6 of each flavour)
• Cocoa-Bean Chocolate
• Luscious Strawberry
• Okey Dokey Cookies and Cream
• Chilled Out Choc Mint
To order or for more information visit sipahh.com.au/

Local, family-owned health food brand Mayver’s has launched four new all-natural, pure-state table spreads made with super powered wholefood ingredients. Mayver’s new range provides a natural alternative to leading supermarket brands of table spreads which often include hidden nasties such as palm oil, hardened fats, emulsifiers and chemical additives.
“We’re a small family company and our promise is genuine. We handpick our ingredients and use traditional chemical-free processing such as water hulling, oven roasting and stone grinding to deliver a natural, healthy table spread that is as close to homemade as possible”, says owner Paul Raff.
Mayver’s is proud to be one of the first companies to introduce the recently approved Health Star Rating system (HSR) to its labeling. Introduced by the Australian Government in June 2014, the voluntary Health Star Rating system calculates energy, saturated fat, sodium, total sugars, fruit, vegetable, nut and legume content, dietary fibre and protein content to assign a score from 0.5 to 5 (with 5 as the healthiest option).
Mayver’s new Original Super Spread is a mix of Chia, Sesame and 5 ‘super nuts’ - Almonds, Hazelnuts, Brazil Nuts, Peanuts and Cashews - simply crushed, blended and bottled into nothing but pure-state goodness. HSR 5
Mayver’s Super Natural Peanut Butter – Crunchy and Smooth varieties. Deliciously healthy, they’re made with 100 per cent Australian peanuts that are simply crushed, bottled and blended with a splash of sea salt to give it that added zing! HSR 4.5
Mayver’s Dark Chocolate Super Spread, a delicious pure-state original spread variation, blended with all-natural dairy-free dark chocolate made with cacao! With only 6g/100g of cane sugar, it has 80 per cent less sugar than leading brands and contains no palm oil, hardened fats or dairy – a big win for Mums looking for a healthier option! HSR4
The Australian Dietary Guidelines include nuts in the protein food group and recommend a daily serving of 30g. Nut varieties are generally rich in a few nutrients
Almonds – protein, calcium and vitamin E
Hazlenuts – fibre, potassium, folate and vitamin E
Brazil nuts – fibre and selenium
Cashews – non-haem iron (ie plant-based) and low GI
Peanuts – niacin, vitamin B6
According to Nutrition Australia, nuts are good for your health.
Research shows eating pure-state foods, such as nuts can
• help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.
• Nuts and seeds have been clinically proven to help regulate blood cholesterol, maintain healthy blood pressure and regulate blood sugar levels, which also reduces the risk of Metabolic Syndrome.
• and decrease dangerous spikes throughout the day.
• Preliminary studies also indicate that nuts may reduce the risk of gallstones, help maintain bone health and slow brain aging.
• Peanuts are packed full of Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant. Resveratrol has been found to have protective functions against cancers, heart disease and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Mayver’s new Super Spread range is available from Woolworths, Coles and independent grocers and health stores in the peanut butter aisle. Mayver’s product range also includes eleven pure-state table spreads available in the health food aisle of Woolworths, Coles and leading health food shops.

Heart to heart parenting
By Robin Grille • ABC $35.00
The tag line on the cover sums up Grille’s philosophy of parenting – ‘nurturing your child’s emotional intelligence from conception to school age’. The book does not focus so much on techniques and tips for parenting, but rather on how to build relationships with children by understanding how children see us and the world around them.
Growing great girls, Growing great boys
By Ian and Mary Grant • Random House $29.95
Respected NZ parenting experts, parents and grandparents, the Grants bring a welcome dose of common sense to the topics of parenting boys and girls. While many parenting principles are universal, “Grandma’s rule” – ‘You can do what you want to do, when you’ve done what you have to do’ is worth remembering!. Each book addresses issues specific to girls and boys, by age; for example the prevailing ‘slut culture’ so damaging to girls. Whether parents like it or not, they dismiss extended day care for very young babies, on the established developmental grounds that babies need one consistent familiar person to whom they can attach.
The new child – in search of smarter grown-ups
By Don and Patricia Edgar • Wilkinson Publishing $34.95
Don and Patricia Edgar have well established credentials in the world of children and families. Don Edgar was founding Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies, Patricia Edgar directed the Australian Children’s Television Foundation for over 20 years. They are uniquely placed to comment on the changing conditions of childhood and its challenges for parents. The Edgars argue that ordinary family life has changed – with onslaughts from online media technologies, the exploitation of children as consumers and the growth of the “all about me” culture.
Life strategies for dealing with bullies
by Jay McGraw • Simon & Schuster $19.95
While there’re lots of books published about bullying written for parents, there are far less that are for kids to read. Written with the same common sense as his famous father (Dr Phil), it’s pitched squarely at preteens. Using kid-friendly language he offers recognisable types – the two-faced friend, the stuck up kid, the bad mouth - as well as scenarios such as e-bullying, then offers solutions and things to think about in a journal format that kids of this age will find very accessible.
The book of grandparents
Clearly a topic which is flavour of the month – this collection also gives well known grandpas and pops a voice. Perhaps it’s because, as Normie Rowe points out – the boomers are now becoming grandparents in an era when so many families are a mix of blends that grandparents are often the constant in a child’s changing world.
The telltale grizzling, the hot-as-pancakes forehead… great, it’s fever time again.
The last thing you need now is the stress of a complicated or unreliable thermometer; the stress of trying to remember what’s a fever and what isn’t… and last but definitely not least, the stress of trying to wrangle an unwilling child into having their temperature taken in the first place!
Luckily fever experts Braun have come up with the ultimate child-friendly solution: the new Braun Touchless + forehead thermometer.
For the first time ever, Braun’s dual technology makes it possible to switch between “touch” and “touchless” mode – taking a reading from up to 5cm away from the forehead, but with ability to switch to the traditional forehead touch method for added peace of mind.
Restless baby? Grabby toddler? Child fallen asleep? It’s super easy to take their temperature with the Braun Touchless + forehead. And you know it’s accurate too, with Braun’s patented satellite sensor which captures 2 x more body heat from the forehead than other ‘no touch’ technology.
Braun’s new thermometer also features a ‘traffic-light’ style, colour-coded display which makes fevers simple to interpret. The colour background tells you instantly how high your child’s fever has reached (Red = high fever, Yellow = moderate fever, Green = normal).
And that pesky positioning? Not an issue with Braun. Like a car with parking sensors, the Touchless + forehead will alert you if the thermometer is correctly (or incorrectly) positioned via a series of beeps and a display on the screen – this further guarantees accurate results, every time.
So let’s count the ways you’re less stressed with Braun: two super-fast modes of fever monitoring for even the grumpiest kind of sickie, guaranteed accuracy, instant fever analysis and positioning guidance that’s sleep-deprivation proof. What could be simpler?
Find the new Braun Touchless + forehead, RRP $99.95 at selected pharmacies. For more information or stockists visit www.fgb.com.au or phone 1800 655 841.
The common cold is the most frequent illness in the world with children affected the most. According to NPS Medicinewise, on average children catch five to ten colds a year, which is more than adults, because they have not been exposed to as many cold viruses as adults.
According to consultant paediatrician, Dr Jonny Taitz, colds and other related illnesses are seasonal and mainly occur in winter but have little to do with cold weather and more to do with the amount of viruses circulating at the time.
“Colds during winter have always been high especially for younger children who are more likely to develop a cold as they spend more time indoors and come in close contact with other children. The most common virus that leads to the common cold is the rhinovirus that inflames the membranes in the lining of the nose and throat.”
Dr Taitz offers tips to help prevent children's colds and flu this winter:
FESS is a natural product that will help parents manage their child's symptoms of coughs and colds.

It’s Nitbusting Time
Children have been back at school now for 8 weeks or so, with plenty of time for head lice to rear their ugly heads, so to speak.
Never fear, a West Australian innovator has spent 10 years on a crusade against head lice, turning to technology in the never-ending war against head lice infestation.
Moshe Maor has developed the Licetec V-Comb™ – an electrical hand held device incorporating combing and vacuuming to eliminate head lice and eggs from hair with the ease of combing.
Driven by the frustrations of a parent dealing with reoccurring head lice, Moshe, said he felt there
was a need to fill a ‘gap in the market’ for a chemical and allergy free solution.
“The V-Comb is basically a one-off cost and can be used again and again on more than one child.
“Unlike other head lice treatments, the V-Comb captures head lice and eggs into a disposable filter, allowing parents and children to see exactly what’s been removed from the hair.
“It gives them the chance to see the whole head lice lifecycle, with eggs and head lice all securely captured in the disposable filter,” Moshe said.
The economical alternative is chemical-free, meaning it is ideal to combat the new breed of chemically-resistant head lice, identified by recent research*.

DEBUNKING HEAD LICE MYTHS
• There is a common misconception that head lice are linked to poor hygiene. Head lice actually prefer clean hair – it’s easier for them to cling to.
• Lice can’t jump – they’re wingless and crawl or swing through hair very quickly. The only way they can be transferred is via head to head contact.
• Research has shown head lice are becoming resistant to chemicals in over-the-counter treatments.
• Lice don’t care if you have long or short hair. They will live in your hair, no matter what length it is.
• Studies have shown lice can survive after an overnight treatment of mayonnaise, white vinegar, olive oil, tea tree oil or Vaseline®.
• Lice love the heat. Their favourite spots are the top of the head, behind the ears, and the nape of the neck. The require blood and heat to survive and feed every three to six hours.
• Spraying the house with pesticide won’t get rid of head lice.
Australian owned and manufactured PapayaGold is a new variation on the pawpaw market.
PapayaGold® paw paw ointment contains a combination of high strength paw paw with a therapeutic strain of Manuka Honey 20+.
Paw paw fruit is valued not only for its delicious flavour but also because of its health benefits. Paw paw is the common name for the Carica Papaya, a tropical fruit that has long been utilised as a traditional medicine for a range of ailments and conditions. This plant has played a very important role and has been revered in many civilisations for its various health giving properties.
The other key ingredient is the Bio Active Manuka honey 20+, which is known worldwide for its medicinal applications. Not all Manuka Honeys have therapeutic properties. Only the honey with a bioactive rating of 16 and above are classified as therapeutic.
Native to New Zealand’s north island, Manuka is the Maori name for the trees, from which the bees source the nectar to produce the honey. The purest strains of Manuka honey are made by bees that interact with just one species of flower which is generally found at high altitude.
The University of Waikato developed a test which rates the anti-bacterial properties of Manuka Honey. Samples are taken by the University from every hive of Manuka Honey to determine the appropriate rating.
The PapayaGold® paw paw ointment enriched with Bio active Manuka honey 20+ contains no “nasties”. The ointment is fragrance free, and has no parabens or sulphates!
PapayaGold® has a recommended retail price of $4.95 and is the next generation Paw Paw Ointment.
